Short Story
Armstrong, British Columbia, Canada
My name is Bailey, and I’m organizing this fundraiser from British Columbia, Canada, where I reside on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Splatsin, Secwépemc, Syilx and Okanagan people. After connecting and communicating with Abdo daily for months, I consider him a good friend. We talk about our children, about his hopes beyond the war for himself and his family, and the daily fight for survival through a genocide; when we say goodbye we hope for the opportunity to greet each other again the next day.
Abdo is a father of four boys, Salem, Ashraf, Sultan, and Nawaf, and a husband to Lamis. He is struggling to keep his family safe and fed in occupied Palestine.
On September 27th Abdo had to endure an appendectomy, with no pain medication and no antibiotiocs for aftercare.
On October 15th, he shared that infections have spread in his leg, leaving it inflamed and in need of urgent treatment. Thankfully, we managed to acquire medication.
Abdo’s father who has diabetes – a condition my grandfather passed from – also suffers from a lack of access to affordable medication.
Earlier this year, his mother, Samira, tragically passed away. She had internal bleeding and needed life-saving surgery in Egypt, but the Israeli occupation blocked her from leaving Gaza.
Abdo’s youngest son, born during the war, still needs formula and milk, but the blockade has cut off food supplies for over two weeks as of October 17th, 2024 – the markets are bare, and prices have skyrocketed, leaving his family unable to afford basic necessities.
Despite everything, this family remains determined to survive. They are tired, but they hold onto their hope and will to live.
But they need our help!
This campaign has TWO URGENT goals:
1. Evacuating to Safety Your donations will help evacuate Abdo’s family to safety. Each dollar brings them closer to freedom: covering border crossing fees, transportation, and living expenses. The more we raise, the more family members we can help!
2. Helping With Essentials While they remain displaced, donations will go toward essentials like baby formula, food, diapers, cooking gas, and medical supplies. These items are critical for their survival while we work toward evacuation.
How You Can Help: Donate and share this campaign!
Abdo and his family have endured so much. Together, we can give them a chance to live in safety and dignity.
